Background

Merlin Labs, a venture-backed pioneer in autonomous flight technology, approached Formset to visualize their AI autopilot systems for military applications. The challenge was to accurately represent highly technical aerospace engineering concepts while creating a visually engaging narrative. With sensitive technology and precise requirements, the project demanded both technical accuracy and creative storytelling to effectively demonstrate how their autonomous systems manage complex aerial maneuvers like mid-air refueling – traditionally one of the most challenging pilot tasks.

The process

Our approach began with extensive research into military aircraft specifications, cockpit layouts, and aerial refueling procedures. Working closely with Merlin Labs' engineering team, we developed technically accurate 3D models of the F-35 and KC-135 aircraft, including detailed cockpit interiors and control systems.

The cockpit interface design required particular attention, as we needed to visualize AI decision-making processes through intuitive graphic displays. Our team developed custom HUD (Heads-Up Display) elements and control panel visualizations that communicate complex data streams while maintaining visual clarity.

After establishing the technical framework, we focused on cinematography and lighting to create dynamic, engaging sequences that highlight key technological features while maintaining the dramatic tension of aerial operations. Multiple rendering iterations and feedback sessions with Merlin's team ensured both technical accuracy and narrative impact.
